David L Cohen sensibly suggests that by adopting pacifism, we save lives AND save money.
The $59 billion war approval is cowardly, including Congressman Kanjorski’s “yes” vote. Politicians justifying funding war to “support the troops” deserve cynicism.
Dissent against all war (including the initial Afghanistan invasion) is the true patriotism. War only accomplishes civilian deaths, waste of finite resources better used for human needs, and deficits. We kill Afghani civilians despite the fact that the 9/11 highjackers were Saudi Arabians. Saudi Arabia is our ally.
Extremists, who consider Saudi Arabia the spiritual center of Islam, are angered by our presence there. Our stay is purely profit motivated.
Ex-CIA operatives have stated in documentaries that there were no WMDs after the first Iraq War. Cooperation with al-Qaida would have threatened Saddam’s power. Therefore politicians claiming support for the Iraq War are not credible. They lied. They knew. Since every U.S. war was preceded by a lie, why should any American believe any president’s rationalization for any war?
Our indirect financial support of the Taliban is nothing new as America repeatedly supports despots. Examples include fascist leader Key of South Vietnam and Saddam. The fundamental assumption that any war defends “freedom ” must be challenged because all war is associated with befriending despots or funding groups such as the Taliban, and because all war leads to nothing but more war.
True troop support means bringing them home immediately. Instead, additional troops are now stationed in Pakistan. Conservatives oppose deficit spending by extending unemployment benefits to struggling Americans, but they’re fine with war deficit spending and tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Progressive folk singer Pete Seeger perhaps put it best in his Vietnam War refrain, “If you love your Uncle Sam, bring ’em home.” Pacifism is the only answer to endless war. The killing must stop.
